June Yard of the Month
NEWTON, NC (July 19, 2019)—The Newton Appearance Commission recently presented Jay and Julie Huitt with the Yard of the Month honor for the month of June.
The Huitts’ home on North Ashe Avenue stands on a slight rise above the street. Lush potted plants line the walkway that leads up to their comfortable front porch, which they consider an extension of their living room. The home is surrounded by neatly manicured beds of perennials and annuals. Favorite plants of the Huitts include geraniums, begonias, ferns, creeping Jenny, impatiens, and marigolds.
“Now that we’re retired, we love living on the porch,” Julie Huitt said. “We love living in this wonderful neighborhood. We have very kind neighbors that stop with compliments even if we don’t know them yet.”
Jay Huitt said he spends a great deal of time making sure their yard looks as beautiful as possible. He said the key to keeping his grass green is over seeding and fertilizing regularly.
“Other than that, you just hope for a lot of rain,” he added.
