2018 Soldiers Reunion

NEWTON, NC (May 30, 2018) - The Newton Merchants Association and American Legion Post 16 are in the process of planning the 2018 Soldiers Reunion Parade and related celebrations.

Soldiers Reunion events will be held during the third week of August.

Questions related to Soldiers Reunion should be referred to the Newton Merchants Association by calling Pin Station Bowling Center at 828-466-2695, as the City of Newton does not organize, plan, or coordinate the event.

The Soldiers Reunion Parade route will not be affected by construction related to the Downtown Newton Streetscape Revitalization Project. The parade will run its normal route up College Avenue and down Main Avenue.

The City of Newton hosts a variety of events in conjunction with Soldiers Reunion. They are:

» Senior Citizens Dance
On Thursday, Aug. 9, the Senior Citizens Dance for those 55 years old and older will run from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. on the lower level of the Newton Recreation Center. Entertainment will be provided by Shake Down Band, a variety band. Admission at the door will be $8 per person. No advance tickets will be sold.

» Summer Pops Concert
On Sunday, Aug. 12, the award-winning Western Piedmont Symphony will perform a free family concert on the 1924 Courthouse Square beginning at 8 p.m. A laser light show by SELEM Artists will accompany the show. In case of inclement weather, the show will be held at Newton-Conover Auditorium.

» Badminton and Pickleball Exhibition
On Monday Aug. 13, a Badminton and Pickleball Friendly Mixer and Exhibition will be held at the Newton Recreation Center. Badminton play will go from 3-5 p.m. Pickleball exhibition and play will be at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 7 p.m. Adult players are asked to make a $3 donation. Children between ages 6 and 12 will be admitted free if accompanied by an adult. Drinks and snacks will be provided, and players will be given one free admission to the Newton Swimming Pool.

» Soldiers Reunion Cornhole Tournament
On Tuesday, Aug. 14, a Cornhole Tournament is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Newton Recreation Center. The entry fee for each two-person team is $10. Teams must register by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10.  Entry forms are available at the Newton Recreation Center.

» Pet Mania
On Wednesday, Aug. 15, pet owners and animal lovers are encouraged to attend and participate in the Pet Mania event at 7 p.m. on the 1924 Courthouse Square. There will be a variety categories in which to compete. The winners from each category will be eligible for Best of Show. The deadline to enter is 6:15 p.m. Aug. 15, but early registration is encouraged. Entry forms are available at the Newton Recreation Center. All pets must have proper vaccinations (with tags) to enter. Pet Mania is sponsored by Conover Veterinary Hospital.

» 29th Annual Southern Biscuit 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Fun Run
On Saturday, Aug. 18, the 29th Annual Southern Biscuit Soldiers Reunion 5K Run/Walk and One-Mile Fun Run will begin at the Newton Recreation Center. The family friendly event will start at 8 a.m. with a one-mile fun run. The 5K run/walk will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in the 5K overall, as well as in each age division, with awards presented for first place only in each age division for the one-mile fun run. Special awards and door prizes provided by local merchants will also be given away.

Preregistration is $20 for the 5K run/walk and $10 for the one-mile fun run. Preregistration is open until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15. Late registration runs through 7:30 a.m. on race day for $25 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile fun run. Registration forms are available at the Newton Recreation Center and participating sponsors.

Participants may also register online. Online registration for the 5K run/walk costs $22.50. Online registration for the one-mile fun run costs $12.50. Online registration runs until midnight Aug. 15 and can be found at www.runsignup.com/race/nc/newton/southernbiscuit5k.

» 30-60-100 Mile Century Bike Ride
On Sunday, Aug. 19, the annual 30-60-100 Mile Century Bike Ride will begin at the Newton Recreation Center. The event begins with a mass start at 8 a.m.

All bicycle rides will be conducted at each rider’s pace, with three ride lengths mapped throughout Catawba County. Each ride offers scenery and hills for cyclists to enjoy. The ride is open to everyone, but riders younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while participating.

First aid, refreshments, T-shirts, and a free swim at the Newton Swimming Pool will be provided for all participants.

Preregistration is $20 and will be accepted until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15. Late registration runs through 7:30 a.m. on ride day for $25.

Ride applications are available at Newton City Hall, the Newton Recreation Center and sponsoring locations.
